The Red Bull Stratos mission to launch 43-year-old Felix Baumgartner into the world's highest freefall skydive successfully made history on Sunday, October 14, 2012.

The mission took Baumgartner, an Austrian daredevil, pilot and extreme athlete, about 24 miles above Earth in a capsule (128,100 feet). Stepping out on a small, skateboard-sized step, he jumped. He reached speeds of 833.9 miles per hour (Mach 1.24), setting a world record as the first person to break the speed of sound in freefall, before opening his parachute at 5,000 feet and landing safely on the ground.(via)
